PICO HYDRO SYSTEMS

About the Technology

In Nepal, grid electricity connection to some of the remote areas is challenging in terms of cost and technical grounds. It is envisioned that an inexpensive Pico hydro system can meet the power demand of some of these area with hydro potential. The main use of power is for night lighting and operating basic electrical appliances.

The concept of pico-hydro in these areas is promising but, however, there is limitation in the use of generator excitation system and controller itself that are being commonly used in present practice. An inexpensive and effective system would mean the use of locally available materials, simple technology and manpower.

Kathmandu Alternative Power and Energy Group (KAPEG) have been working in research and development in the area of pico-hydro technology since 2004.
